With assistance from Linda Kennedy, resident nib technician at Indy-Pen-Dance; and Brian Gray, founder and president of the Edison Pen Company, I will offer my hands-on workshop on nib smoothing, working directly with participants, at the Ohio Pen Show.
The workshop will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. on SUNDAY NOVEMBER 3RD. In this intensive two-hour session, I will teach you how to smooth nibs and do some basic adjustments using the tools and methods I’ve developed during more than 20 years of experience. (I cannot guarantee that you will be an accomplished nibmeister at the end of the session, but you will have learned a lot and, I hope, had a good time.)
We will have space for 16 hands-on participants. Participants must register in advance.
Your prepaid $20.00 materials fee will cover the cost of the tools, supplies, and pens you will use. You’ll also need to bring a good unlighted hand loupe. I recommend a high-quality 10× loupe such as the BelOMO triplet, available on eBay and from other dealers on the Internet. (With cheap loupes, you get what you pay for: shoddy construction and poor optics.) Check prices before buying; I’ve seen this loupe offered for prices ranging from less than $40.00 to more than $75.00.
The materials kit includes two practice pens. Please don’t bring your own pens expecting to work on them during the workshop. After the session, you will keep your materials so that you can continue honing your skills at home. Be sure to include your name and “shipping address” as you check out through PayPal! We won’t mail you anything, but we need your information to compile our list of participants.
As noted above, participation is limited to 16 people — but if you can’t register, you’re still welcome to come and audit the session. We will have extra copies of the handout for those auditing, and auditors may also ask questions.
Please remember to bring a good 10× loupe. The better the optics you have, the better you’ll be able to see the nibs you’ll be working on. Unlighted loupes are better for this kind of work than lighted ones.
